Tips For Purchasing A Baseball Catchers Gear Set

If your son (or daughter) has decided to become a catcher, then you will need to purchase a baseball catchers gear set. An entire set can be fairly expensive, especially since this is equipment you don't want to skimp on.

First of all, when you purchase a baseball catchers gear set as opposed to buying the items separately, you'll need to verify the recommended age on the set. It's very important that catchers gear fits properly.

If you choose to buy online, it would behoove your catcher to try on some equipment first so you can verify the size/age description. Catcher's gear should neither be too big nor too small as safety and comfortability are the two key issues to consider.

Expect to spend at least $150 for a beginner. This would include the mask (also now known as a catcher's helmet), the chest protector and the shin or leg guards. Some sets are now including "knee savers" which provide extra cushion for the knees.

For youngsters who still have a lot of growing to do, it may be wise to shop at a second hand sports store. However, don't sacrifice quality for cheap. The catcher's position is tough enough without having to do so with inferior equipment.

Here are a few tips to consider in order to make catching an enjoyable activity:

  1. Leg or shin guards need to protect the front of the leg, the knee, and the top of the foot. They also need to be tight enough so they don't flap around.
  2. The helmet or mask should fit snugly, not to tight or loose. A good leather interior makes for a good fitting mask, and tends to stay cooler.
  3. A chest protector should be lightweight, yet have enough good foam padding to take hard foul tips.
  4. Always keep in mind that the catcher's position gets very hot. Look for equipment that is designed for cooling.

To give you an idea of what you may find, here are some excerpts taken from catcher gear sets recently found online:

  • The youth catcher's helmet features a strong, light shell made of injected molded ABS plastic and a dual-welded steel mask. The chest protector comes with multi-layered foam padding with built in sternum plates for added protection.
  • The catcher's leg guards are designed with resistant plastic components for better protection and full wing padding for comfort.
  • High performance catcher's gear utilizes high tech materials and innovations such as Low Rebound Technology that drastically reduces ball rebound for greater control behind the plate, patented 3 layer padding, and Drylite inner lining.
  • Knee savers and extra large equipment bag included with purchase
